President's Message
Welcome to the official website of the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Club of America.  The breed was granted AKC recognition in 1995.  The GSMDCA is the parent club of the breed and a member club of AKC.

The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, known as the Swissy, was developed as the all around farm dog in Switzerland.  The breed was thought to have been close to extinction at the beginning of the 1900’s when it was rediscovered at a dog show by the Sennenhund expert Dr. Albert Heim.  In 1908 systematic breeding began and the breed has enjoyed a slow, but steady growth since then.

The GSMDCA encourages participation in all types of activities that maintain the working heritage of the breed.  Swissy enthusiast enjoy carting, herding and packing with their dogs.  Swissys also compete in conformation, obedience, rally, tracking and therapy work.  Occasionally the breed has been used as search and rescue dogs.  Of course they are always willing to partake in that great American pastime of lying on the sofa and watching TV.

We hope you will take some time to enjoy our website and learn more about our wonderful dogs.
